We are delighted to announce the publication of A Quest for Meaning – A journey through philosophy, science and spirituality, the final book by the sadly deceased priest and scholar Dr Fr Gearóid O’Donnchadha. The estate of Fr Gearóid benefited from our manuscript appraisal service and subsequent copy-editing services, provided by both Jeremy Murphy and Dr Sarah Meehan O’Callaghan, with the aim of producing a manuscript for Irish publishers to consider. Jeremy then offered the rights to Orpen Press, who will publish Quest in St Joseph’s Oratory, Fenit, Tralee, this Thursday the 27th.
We are delighted to announce that the book will be launched by Minister for Education, Ms Norma Foley TD. We are also honoured that Fr Ray Browne, Bishop of Kerry, and Fr Bill Murphy, former Bishop of Kerry, will also be in attendance.
Quest was very much a team effort from the very beginning. Jeremy is eager to thank Fr Gearóid’s extended family and estate for, ‘the faith they placed in us, myself in particular, by entrusting us with the appraisal and editing of Fr Gearóid’s raw manuscript and the task of locating the perfect publisher. The passion for Fr Gearóid’s ideas and message displayed by Risteárd Pierse, Noreen O’Brien, Robert Pierse and Dr Olive Pierse was infectious. Quest is very much the late Fr Gearóid’s final journey, a final voyage from an adept adventurer, a wanderer to both physical and metaphysical new lands, and I hope readers will eagerly join the late scholar on this his final intellectual journey.’
A Quest for Meaning tackles the sense of meaninglessness so many in the modern world are afflicted with. Taking readers on an intellectual tour de force through quantum theory, phenomenology, developments in sociology, Eastern mathematics, and the history of the Christian faith, Fr O’Donnchadha’s message is that faith and hope are still possible, despite the horrors of recent centuries.
While a book of ideas, A Quest for Meaning is passionately written, with Fr O’Donnchadha drawing on his years of experience as both a priest and university teacher. While grappling with complex ideas, the author was eager to appeal to the layperson, and impress upon them that it is possible to find meaning in the modern world.
