‘Quest’ Sets Sail From Fenit

Minister for Education Norma Foley TD, Fr Francis Nolan and Jeremy Murphy (JM Agency) at launch of Quest

Quest for Meaning: A journey through philosophy, science and spirituality, the final book by Dr Fr Gearóid O’Donnchadha, was launched to the world at St Joseph’s Oratory in Fenit, by Minister for Education Norma Foley TD and Fr Ray Browne, Bishop of Kerry.

Minister Foley complimented Jeremy and Sarah (of JM Agency) for their success in appraising and editing Quest for Meaning. Jeremy later sold the rights to Orpen Press, who were complimented by Risteard Pierse, nephew of the late Fr Gearóid.

Bishop Browne, in a warm address to those congregated, invoked the image of St Brendan, so important to the late Fr Gearóid. Minister Foley also complimented the late author for his achievements in the field of education. Fr Gearóid had lectured in the United States before assuming a permanent position at what was then Tralee Regional Technical College. During his stint at the institute, he would distinguish himself as a charismatic lecturer and forward-thinking educationalist, mentoring many of his colleagues, including Dr Breda O’Dwyer, who played an integral role on the Quest editorial team. Because of his and others’ efforts, the IT Tralee recently received university status; MTU (Munster Technological University).

Quest- is unique in the respect it is a book of ideas communicated passionately. While grappling with subjects such as quantum theory and phenomenology, the tone is impassioned, almost edifying on occasion. The book also testifies to the author’s belief in the importance of debate, discourse and dialogue. In Quest-, enemies are placed in conversation with each other, contrasting schools engage in dialogue. If Quest- had an underlying purpose, it is to place Christian theology in dialogue with secular science and philosophy. The results are fascinating.

Quest is available in good bookstores throughout Ireland. You can also purchase it directly on the Orpen Press website.
